Inherently Safer Design Concepts
In designing a hydrogen system, it may be possible to reduce risk, even to the extent of "designing out" the hazard. Some steps to eliminate or reduce hazards are:
- Avoid using hazardous materials when possible
- Minimize quantity of hazardous materials
- Control the operating conditions (temperature, pressure, concentration, etc.) to reduce hazards
- Design facilities and equipment using:
- inherent safety features and
- fail safe designs
- Choose safer locations and consider:
- outdoor installation
- access control
- safety barriers
- remote operation (separation distance)
