Inherently Safer Design Concepts

In designing a hydrogen system, it may be possible to reduce risk, even to the extent of "designing out" the hazard. Some steps to eliminate or reduce hazards are:

1. Avoid using hazardous materials when possible
2. Minimize quantity of hazardous materials
3. Control the operating conditions (temperature, pressure, concentration, etc.) to reduce hazards
4. Design facilities and equipment using:
   • inherent safety features and
   • fail safe designs
5. Choose safer locations and consider:
   • outdoor installation
   • access control
   • safety barriers
   • remote operation (separation distance)
