Alkaline Stability of AEMs

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

A procedure for ex-situ evaluation of chemical (alkaline) stability of anion exchange membranes (AEM). The IEC and ionic conductivity of an AEM is measured before and after being heated (typically at 80C in 1 M KOH) for ~1000 hours. The SOP was prepared by Vijay Ramani and Kelly M. Meek.

Post Test Teardown Analysis

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

This procedure is intended to provide guidance and best practices for diagnosing component failure in an operated electrolyzer cell for both PEM and AEM systems. Instructions for disassembling cell hardware, labeling and preserving cell components and diagnostic test methods for these components are discussed. This procedure assumes a 1-cell Fraunhofer electrolyzer test cell, but it is possible to adapt this for other cell hardware and multi-cell stacks. The SOP was developed by Jennifer Glenn.

Comparison Metrics and Terms for Low Temperature Electrolysis

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

Defines a standard set of definitions, metrics, units, and conventions for low temperature electrolysis (LTE). The goal is to ensure that the literature is consistent from research group to research group, and data is reported in similar formats, such that results can be compared on a similar basis. The SOP was prepared by Katherine Ayers.

PTL Resistance and Water Properties

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

The purpose of this procedure is to determine the electrical bulk resistance of the porous transport layer (PTL) as well as the pore size distribution (PSD), mean flow pore diameter, and water contact angle of the PTL.  This protocol assumes that the PTL has been thoroughly cleaned prior to testing.   This protocol also assumes that the PTL being tested has uniform thickness and is defect-free. This SOP was prepared by Guido Bender.

Non PGM Conductivity measurement

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

A procedure for measuring the electrical conductivity of PGM-free OER catalyst powders to allow comparison of one material to another. This standard two-point conductivity protocol is applicable to transition metal oxides, mixed oxides, perovskites, spinels, etc. The SOP was prepared by Alexey Serov.

RDE

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

A standardized procedure for rotating disk electrode (RDE) experiments for the ex-situ characterization of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for PEM water electrolyzers. This protocol should allow for the analysis of onset potential, overpotential at a fixed current, catalytic activity, and electrochemical surface area of these catalysts. The SOP was prepared by Shaun Alia and Nem, Danilovic.

AEM Gas permeability

Submitted by bill.gutierrez on April 25, 2025

A procedure for the measurement of gas permeability of an anion exchange membrane (AEM). During the course of the electrochemical reaction, low gas permeation of hydrogen and oxygen through the membrane is crucial to run the process efficiently. The gas permeation rate can be measured using (A) pressure permeation cell, (B) electrochemical monitoring cell, (C) microelectrode and (D) in-situ measurement in MEA. The process relies on a chronoamperometric technique to accurately measure the gas permeation rate across the membrane. The SOP was prepared by Sarah Park.
