Abstract

Because of environmental problems, there is a need to develop vehicles with little or no polluting emissions. Among these, hydrogen-fueled cars are being considered. There are three possibilities for onboard storage of hydrogen: compressed hydrogen, hydrogen in hydrides and liquid hydrogen. The last solution provides the lightest storage option. However, there are problems that must be overcome relating to filling the vehicles with liquid hydrogen. This paper reports on the tests conducted at an industrial-scale facility for improving the liquid hydrogen fueling of vehicles, as well as enhancing the safety of liquid hydrogen handling. It also covers the improvements in filling time needed and the reduction of boil-off losses as compared with previous methods.
