Advanced Water Splitting Technologies (AWST)

DOE Hydrogen Production Program

AWST Benchmarking Project

The project goal is to create a comprehensive protocol and best practices benchmarking framework at the materials, component, device, and systems levels for advanced water splitting technologies - high and low temperature electrolysis (HTE and LTE), photoelectrochemical (PEC), and solar thermochemical (STCH) water splitting.

The goal of this website is to have one location where the international community easily find, access, use, communicate and participate in the development of vital benchmarking deliverables including: publications, measurement protocols, standard measurement results and data, standards, lessons learned, relevant meetings, community feedback and project involvement.

Description of how we intend to gain community wide agreement on measurement protocols and reporting. And the need to consolidate various international codes, metrics, measurement protocols, standards, and publishing details into one universally accepted system that would be accessible at this website.

Describe the benefits of the information provided here to encourage community wide use of these measurement protocols, validation testing, best-practices, standards, and reporting. For example the following Motivations:

  • Differing results from equivalent measurements lead to questions about where the differences come from and what potential errors may be involved.
  • Without Benchmarking, the use of protocols, and best-practices; Errors in Measurements, Analysis, or Reporting can lead to:
    • Lost time for the group doing the work.
    • Exciting results that lead the community down a false path.
    • Loss for the community in efforts, time, funding, and credibility…
    • And also for instance have some discussion of using this website as a learning tool for students and researchers new to this field or new to specific topic areas. It might be good to have one webpage devoted to newcomers to the field.

Describe the approaches that are being taken to improve and accelerate benchmarking work including protocol development, protocol testing and improvement, validation testing, standards (with data sets) for testing measurement equipment, procedures, and analysis. For example community involvement in: writing and testing protocols, participating in the Annual meetings, feedback from the community after using the protocols and what new protocols are needed.

Community efforts to show the benefits to adherence to accepted best-practices and the validity of exciting new results. For instance maybe having links to or even a webpage with actual publications considered highly successful that utilized these protocols and best practices. For example “Awarding” publications by presenting them on this website, with new awards every quarter or ?
